How Pressure Relief Valves Work
The fundamental principle of a PRV is to sense excessive pressure and automatically open to discharge the excess fluid (gas or liquid). Once the pressure returns to a safe level, the valve closes, preventing further discharge.
In a spring-loaded PRV, the spring force keeps the valve disc seated against the nozzle. When the system pressure exceeds the spring's set pressure, the force overcomes the spring, lifting the disc and allowing fluid to escape. As the pressure drops, the spring force reseats the disc, closing the valve.
